It’s May of 1994. One afternoon, in Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, NBC announced that a show innocuously titled Friends had made the fall schedule.
Later that night I was in the bar of a New York hotel with Don Ohlmeyer, the president of NBC West Coast; Jimmy Burrows, who directed the Friends pilot; and my husband. Seated at the next table were Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer. I had to find a way to tell you how much I enjoyed your book. i also wanted to thank you for writing it and giving me a closer look at Hollywood. You see, 35 years ago I was pursuing a career in LA in the music industry. I had been selected as one of 8 finalist in the Bob Hope Search for the Top in Collegiate Talent(now called ACTS) and later signed with an Agency; Mother Hubbard Productions. I experienced a certain measure of success by travelling abroad with a band called New Mexico and playing military bases throughout the country and over seas. I landed in Hollywood in 1984 with BIG DREAMS. I found a job working in Century City and auditioned for many bands but landed a gig with RCA recording artist Michael Wycoff. I was ready to sign with a major company when i got a call that my uncle, back in Missouri, had passed. So I left LA for what I thought would be a brief time to help my mom, when I met my husband. I fell in love and the rest is history. I’m now happily married and have two children and recently, a grandson. I had plans of returning to LA but it just didn’t happen. I have often wondered what my life would have been like if I would have returned to LA, to the glitz and glam. The possibilities were there for me. I chose love over career. Your book gave me such insight and I’m grateful that you were inspired to write it. I wanted to say a heartfelt “thank you”. i’ve often asked God why he did not allow me to go back to LA. reading your book gave me that answer. I’m not sure I would have been strong enough or as tough as Alexa, whom I loved by the way. This book answered that life long question for me. I’m certain I made the right choice. I’m not the big star I set out to be but I’ve had a few successess since then. It has been a wonderful life, and I stll get a chance to do what I love most every now and then.Singing/performing. Thanx Lindy and may God bless you and your incredible gift. Peace.
Thank you for getting in touch, Sylvia! I’m so glad you connected with the book. It was a thrill to write it, and an even greater thrill to hear from readers like you. Have a wonderful rest of the summer!
